What is root canal treatment?
Root canal therapy treats infections that develop deep inside teeth. Deep within our teeth is a hollowed structure called “the root canal”. This structure contains dental pulp and nerve endings.
When a tooth is cracked or severely decayed, the root canal may become infected. If this infection spreads, a person may lose his or her tooth. Root canal treatment removes the infected structures within a tooth and seals it so that bacteria can no longer enter. Having root canal therapy will alleviate discomfort, prevent the need for extraction, and restore your oral function.
How do I know if I need root canal therapy?
Toothaches are a common sign that you may need root canal therapy, but some patients may need this treatment even if they do not have symptoms. The best way to determine if your root canal is infected is to consult with a dentist. After a physical examination and reviewing X-rays, your dental health provider will be able to determine the appropriate course of action for your needs.
Is the procedure painful?
Having an infected root canal can be quite painful but treating the infection isn’t overly uncomfortable. A dentist will use local anesthetics and sometimes sedatives to help ensure their patients’ comfort during treatment. Once the infection is treated, patients will be able to enjoy comfortable oral function within a few days of their procedure.
Will I need a dental crown after root canal treatment?
If a tooth is badly decayed or cracked, it may require a restoration like a dental crown following root canal therapy. The restoration will protect the tooth’s outer structure from further degradation.
